Sutivan

Sutivan is by many considered as the most charming town of them all on the Island of Brač. It is also believed to be the oldest on the island coastline. The oldest traces of a settlement were dated back to certain buildings from the era of Diocletian, a Roman emperor famous for ereceting Diocletian's palace, a starting point of what is today's Split. Sutivan's name is derived from the name of St John the Baptist's church, erected at a place of ancient christian basilica. Sutivan has been constantly inhabited ever since. One of its landmarks, a castle on the east of the town, was built as a defense construction against Ottoman intrusions. Inhabitants dealt primarily with producing outstanding wine and excellent olive oil.
