Solta Island

Solta island is one of the oldest and one of the most charming Croatian islands. It was inhabited in early Roman times and known as „Olynthia“, a fig island. That name sums many beauties of Solta in just one word and additionally explains what it's all about: nature, outstanding forests, amazing flora (grape vine, citrus fruit, olive trees, etc.) and a number of charming, hidden little beaches where one can really enjoy privacy. During mediveal times, only settlements in the inner part of the island were inhabited, whereas seafront villages saw larger expansion during reneissance times. It is then that this lovely island became a place where many residents of Split fled plague and growing Ottoman danger. At the same time, Šolta provided numerous goods for Split: wine, fruit, crops, olive oil, etc. However, many Šoltanians were forced to leave their island in the end of 19th century and in early 20th century due to grape vine disease which then left many people without any outcome. These people have nevertheless remained loyal to their birth place: they built schools, libraries and many other necessary amenities. Solta island is nowadays still a place of traditional agriculture which then provides great local food for all the tourists. Šoltanians are also skilled fishermen so if you visit, make sure you taste all the fish specialties. Of course, there is a growing number of tourists visiting this picturesque island. Once they come, they usually fall in love with its peace, serenity and untouched beauty.
